Project 2 Shadow’s Light
Shadow’s Light
Tonal Drawing – Shading, Light, and Shadow

Size: 11.7 x 16.5 inches

Medium: Graphite pencil, charcoal pencil on paper

Date: 2024

Work was completed independently

In this project, I explored the relationship between light and shadow through tonal drawing, demonstrating how these elements shape our perception of objects and spaces. By observing light's interaction with surfaces, I created drawings that captured transitions between light and darkness, allowing me to experiment with shading techniques to reveal depth, texture, and form in everyday objects. Shadows, often overlooked, emerged as powerful tools that enhance the perception of scenes and add complexity to ordinary environments.

I learned how vital light and shadow are in architectural design, affecting how spaces feel and are experienced. This project refined my skills in using tonal variation to convey dimensionality and atmosphere—essential for any designer. I also found that subtle shifts in light can dramatically change an environment's character, a lesson I intend to apply in future architectural projects where lighting and atmosphere influence user experience.
